Specialized Restorative Bodywork is a broad term I use to explain what I do. Every treatment utilizes multiple modalities designed for your needs on that day going above and beyond your average bodywork treatment to offer you the best healing opportunities possible.

Orthopedic Massage and Manual Therapy is the most utilized modality in my practice and I bolster that work with supporting modalities to fit your needs.

The myriad aches and pains that we deal with can often originate from a tear or irritation to a ligament or tendon.  If you suffer from any chronic ache or pain, you may benefit greatly from Orthopedic Massage.

Orthopedic Massage is exceptionally beneficial for those who have experienced:

Auto Accident Injury

Work-Related Injury

Sports Injury

Slip & Fall

Headaches and Migraines

Whiplash

Shoulder injury

Neck, Back, Hip pain

Ankle injuries

Knee injuries

Muscle strains

Joint Sprains

What is Orthopedic Massage…

Orthopedic Massage is a very effective, specific soft tissue technique that helps realign any adhesive scar tissue that has formed from the initial onset of an injury. This type of scar tissue formation is the primary mechanism of chronic injury.

Poorly formed scar tissue weakens the injured tissue that is trying to heal which in turn causes the persistent kind of pain that can come and go over weeks, months, or even years.  Many people associate this pain as “normal” which eventually becomes a part of their day-to-day life and will inevitably impact their activities. However, it does not have to be this way.  With the right treatment and time allowed for healing, these nagging aches and pains that have been hanging on for far too long can be eliminated.

Orthopedic Massage treats the root cause and the associated symptoms such as trigger points, movement restrictions, and chronic pain.

Technique

The primary specific treatment technique used is called Friction Therapy. Friction Therapy addresses the areas that need attention and brings back the strength and integrity to those weakened injured tissues. Other massage and manual therapy modalities may be utilized to enhance healing and progress towards the goal.

Assessment

Before treatment can begin, an assessment is needed. This initial evaluation will review the specifics regarding your lifestyle habits, medications, surgeries, history of the onset of injury, pain, and discomfort. A functional movement screen and a thorough musculoskeletal examination will also be performed to analyze tension patterns and movement inefficiencies. This information is vital for the practitioner to be effective. After the assessment is complete, the findings and treatment recommendations will be discussed.

Treatment

This is a hands-on treatment session where one or more parts of the body will be treated. If you have never had massage or bodywork before, here is what to expect. Depending on the treatment technique that is recommended by your practitioner, you may keep your underwear or other clothing on. To ensure your privacy, a towel or sheet will be used to cover any part of your body that is not being treated. You are encouraged to relax and communicate with your practitioner if anything makes you feel uncomfortable. Massage oil may or may not be used, this depends on the type of technique being used. For example, friction therapy or myofascial therapy does not require oil or lotion when performed.

Other techniques that you may experience in your treatment session are Cupping, Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (A.K.A. Guasha or scraping), Active Isolated Stretching (AIS), myofascial release, deep tissue, neuromuscular release, myoskeletal alignment, active release, proprioceptor neuromuscular facilitation stretching (PNF), corrective exercise.

CranioSacral Therapy is also available by request. CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle hands on approach to evaluation of the body’s craniosacral system that consists of membranes and cerbrospinal fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord. This method of treatment is very beneficial for everyone, especially those who are pressure sensitive and need a gentler hands-on treatment.

What to do before your session…

* Shower and brush your teeth. Good hygiene is required for both client and therapist.

* Wear comfortable clothes. Sessions vary with modality. There are some techniques that are better done while clothed such as stretching or exercise.

* Drink Water. Hydration before and after your session is very important! Dehydration contributes to the tightness of your muscles among other important facts. Hydration before the session helps ease the muscles into relaxation and after the session helps aid the body in toxin removal as well as replenish hydration for any water loss during the session.

After Care

Your body is adjusting and learning new patterns of movement. During your healing process, one of three experiences may occur.

1. You may notice that you are feeling better. Your body is adapting efficiently to your environment. Allowing you to decrease stress and feel better.

2. You don’t notice anything. Your body is working through the new stimulus of muscle alignment, changes may be so subtle that you may not feel anything new.

3. You may be sore for a couple of days after your session. It is completely normal to feel sore and achy for 48-72 hours after treatment. Your body is adjusting to the new muscle alignment, increased range of motion, and increased circulation to knotted/troubled areas. It is also breaking a cycle of distress between your nervous system, joints, and muscles. This can create discomfort in the areas that were worked on as your body adjusts. If you are sore for longer than 72 hours, please inform your practitioner so the treatment can be adjusted.

Think of the healing process as peeling back the layers of an onion. Each session will unlock and release stress and trauma that has accumulated in your body. As each layer is pulled back, your body will be able to effectively process the information that will allow it to function at a high level.
